CURATORS’S STATEMENT
New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina; a goat ranch in west Texas; an island in Maine. Three more different places are difficult to imagine. In each, however, the people who live and work there are rooted to their location and their culture by the same intangible, but very real, emotional threads which tie them to their own particular place. Seen through the eyes of three photographers, these places and the people who live there come alive as illustrations of what it means to be connected to the place where we live or from which we come. Their photographs allow the viewer to participate in the experience of being so deeply rooted to a place and culture that it becomes an integral part of who one is.
Visually stunning, these projects by Susan Hayre Thelwell of Santa Fe, NM, Jon Edwards of Freeport, Maine, and Thomas Neff of Baton Rouge, LA contain a lyrical element which encompasses their documentary purposes and yet moves beyond into the realm of emotion and spirit. Having entered this realm, we are offered a quiet yet visceral expression of what makes each place, each community, sacred.
