(Typically, these items are scheduled for the General Election Date, but we will be announcing them as they are determined and set. )

As you know, in Louisiana, IN FEDERAL ELECTIONS ONLY, we now have a "Closed Party Primary" system. Simply stated, this means that IN A PRIMARY ELECTION FOR A FEDERAL OFFICE ( i.e. U.S. Congressman, U.S. Senator, etc. ) when a recognized Party has two or more candidates seeking their Party's nomination in the First Party Primary. IF there are enough candidates seeking the nomination in a Party where the First Party Primary results in a runoff between the top two candidates of the First Party Primary, then there will be a Second Party Primary Election for that Party. There may be one or two Primaries ( depending upon the number of candidates running ) in any or another Party in order to get down to a single Candidate in each Recognized Party for the General Election.

There are five Recognized Parties in Louisiana - "GREEN" - "REFORM" - "LIBERTARIAN" - "DEMOCRAT" and "REPUBLICAN". If you are not registered as affiliated with any of the 5 Recognized Parties in Louisiana, your voter I.D. Card will indicate that you are registered as "NONE" or "OTHER".

Remember, in order to participate in a Party Primary, you must be registered as a member of that Party... with some exceptions.

A voter registered as affiliated with the Republican Party is permitted to vote only for or against canditates listed as "Republican".

A voter registered as affiliated with the Democratic Party is permitted to only vote only for or against candidates listed as "Democrat".

A voter registered as affiliated with the Green Party is permitted to vote only for or against candidates listed in the "Green" Party.

( IF there is a Green Party Primary ). ( i.e. "Two or more candidates seeking that Party's nomination." )

A voter registered as affiliated with the Libertarian Party is permitted to vote only for or against candidates listed in the "Libertarian" Party.

( IF there is a Libertarian Party Primary ). ( i.e. "Two or more candidates seeking that Party's nomination." )

A voter registered as affiliated with the Reform Party is permitted to vote only for or against candidates listed in the "Reform" Party.

( IF there is a Reform Party Primary ). ( i.e. "Two or more candidates seeking that Party's nomination." )

"HOWEVER, if you are registered as party affilliation of "NONE" or "OTHER", you ARE permitted to vote and participate in the Democratic Party Primaries AND the Libertarian Party Primaries, but not in the other Recognized Parties' Primaries. ** This is the decision made by the Parties. **

IN THE FEDERAL GENERAL ELECTION, regardless of which Party you are affiliated with, you may vote for or against any Canditate listed on the ballot as running for the Office.

IN THE STATE / LOCAL PRIMARIES ... AND ... IN THE STATE / LOCAL GENERAL ELECTIONS, regardless of which Party you are affiliated with, you may vote for or against any Canditate listed on the ballot as running for the Office.

A "STATE" Primary or General Election is one in which Offices such as Governor, Attorney General, St. Representative, or others who serve on the State Level of Government are selected.

"LOCAL" Primary or General Election is one in which Offices such sa Sheriff, Parish President, District Judge, Mayor, Alderman, or others who serve on the "Local" Level of Government are selected.
